Lidcombe Program for Early Childhood/Preschool Stuttering (ages 3 to 7)
How can the Lidcombe Stuttering Program help your child?

The Lidcombe Program is a highly successful evidenced based behavioral treatment program that was designed for young children who stutter and their families. The objective of this program is to try and eliminate stuttering in young children in a fun, systematic and structured manner. Therapy is provided to the child by Lori Melnitsky, Lidcombe Certified speech pathologist with over 20 years experience in stuttering/fluency therapy. Parents are taught to work with their children daily to decrease stuttering. Parents will feel empowered helping their child speak more fluently. Lori has added a coaching part to this program which is highly positive and effective.

This program is ideal for children ages 2.5 to 8. In order for children to improve fluency at this age parents must use a structured approach and be involved daily. It is important to address stuttering early and NOT to wait. We can help your child to try and stop stuttering!

School Age Stuttering

SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN– STEP UP TO FLUENCY – 12 week Structured Fluency PROGRAM-Stuttering therapy is customized for each school aged child. Tools and strategies are available to improve fluency and boost confidence to overcome difficult speaking situations. Activities are geared towards the child’s interests. Our goal at this age is for the school aged child to manage stuttering and not let it stop them from talking. It is usually recommended for school aged children to be seen once to twice weekly and then transition to a group for maintenance. It is most effective when parents work directly with the child under my guidance and this is strongly encouraged. Children are put on a home program following therapy. Call 516-776-0184 today to schedule an evaluation

Teen & Adult Stuttering Program

The MPI treatment schedule is divided into four phases: Pretreatment, Establishment, Transfer, and Maintenance. Each phase of the therapy is designed to be managed jointly by the client and the clinician. It is expected that the Pretreatment Phase will be largely directed by the clinician. The subsequent phases will be largely self-managed, but required regular validation by the clinician in charge of the program. Once treatment is complete, most clients achieve natural-sounding stutter-free speech.

Pretreatment Phase

The Pretreatment Phase is composed of within-clinic speaking tasks and Beyond-clinic speaking tasks. The principal purpose of the Pretreatment Phase speaking task is to (a) collect baserate beyond- and within-clinic recordings of the subject’s speech performance and (b) identify the subject’s functional PI range.

Establishment Phase

The goal of the Establishment Phase is for the client to achieve stutter-free and natural sounding speech within the clinic. This is accomplished by using specialized biofeedback software that is customized to the client by the clinician.

Transfer Phase

The aim of the Transfer Phase is for the client to transfer the same stutter-free and natural sounding speech established within the clinic outside of the clinic. This is accomplished with real-world speaking assignments (i.e. talking on the phone, to a person, etc).

Maintenance Phase

The purpose of the Maintenance Phase is to maintain the progress achieved in the Transfer Phase while gradually reducing the client off of the speaking tasks.
